Une chanson:The highwayman

    

     Contrairement à la précédente chanson The highwayman est un joyau composé et interprété par Jimmy Webb, honteusement méconnu alors que ce génie musical précoce est l'un des artistes les plus étonnants,depuis le triomphe de MacArthur Park,la somptueuse ballade chantée par l'acteur Richard Harris.Voir Une chanson:MacArthur Park .Né en 46 Webb a connu des débuts fulgurants comme compositeur,arrangeur,producteur notamment des meilleures chansons du folk-singer Glen Campbell(Galveston,Wichita lineman) et dans un style très différent vu l'éclectisme du personnage les sublimes mélodies du groupe vocal The Fifth Dimension(Go where you wanna go,Up up and away).

   Puis Jimmy Webb devint lui-même interprète avec un succès moyen et cette magnifique chanson The highwayman,composée en 77 ne devint un classique que dix ans après dans la version de Johnny Cash.The highwayman est une mélodie d'une telle richesse qu'elle permet les interprétations les plus diverses.Je vous propose celle de Jimmy Webb seul au piano et celle du supergroupe d'un disque,The Highwaymen,composés excusez du peu,de Johnny Cash,Willie Nelson,Kris Kristofferson et Waylon Jennings.

   Les paroles de The Highwayman,poétiques et oniriques, semblent sortir de la légende du Hollandais Volant,capitaine du Vaisseau Fantôme et...immortel,avec un zeste de  celle du Cavalier sans tête.Si vous l'écoutez vous comprendrez qu'une chanson de cette qualité s'offre à nous aussi bien dans une version néo-romantique,seul au piano, ou dans un "boeuf" country,mais country upper-class.Vous comprendrez aussi que tant que l'on peut écouter Webb, Cash, Nelson,Kristofferson et Jennings on ait le droit de dire I love America.

Ah j'ai cette chanson sur un cd de country... je l'associe à beaucoup de souvenirs de mon enfance/adolescence... c'est amusant de la retrouver !

Je me souviens surtout de la version de willie Nelson. Mais je ne savais pas qu'il avait chanté cette chanson avec Cash, Kristofferson et Webb.
